Encephalitis, meningitis, meningoencephalitis, neurotoxoplasmosis, myelitis… Central nervous system (CNS) infections can be very serious or even fatal. They generally progress rapidly, worsening the patient's condition, and are often difficult to diagnose due to the overlap of clinical symptoms. These infections therefore require rapid and accurate diagnosis and management.
The diagnosis of these diseases is generally based on the accumulation of several tests: serological, culture, targeted amplification of nucleic acids (read the box below for more details)… It remains to this day expensive, time-consuming and of relative effectiveness (example: 50% failure for the diagnosis of meningoencephalitis). In addition, it comes up against the limitation of samples, in particular those from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), or brain tissue, to perform the different tests.
