Two men arrested following the attack on Wednesday on several health workers in the emergency room of Annemasse (Haute-Savoie) were brought before the Thonon-les-Bains judicial court on Saturday and will be tried immediately on Monday, the prosecution said.
Pending the hearing, the two brothers, who had been in police custody since Thursday, were placed under judicial supervision by the judge of liberties and detention, indicated in a press release the prosecutor of Thonon-les-Bains Xavier Goux-Thiercelin.
The two men, who came to see one of them on Wednesday evening at the emergency room of the Hôpital privé des Pays de Savoie (HPPS) in Annemasse and were unhappy with the waiting times, are suspected of having attacked the staff of the department, causing thirteen victims during a very violent episode.
Of the 13 victims identified among the hospital staff, 12 were recognized as having been unable to work for between 6 and 1 day, some of them having suffered physical violence, others psychological shock, according to the press release from the public prosecutor's office.
The two men were arrested the following day when they went to the Annemasse police station to complain about the conditions of their admission to hospital and a refusal of treatment.
They dispute the hospital staff's version of events and claim that the injured man's brother was attacked after he pointed out to a nurse that she smelled of alcohol.
They say they were assaulted by several people and were only defending themselves, according to the prosecution.
The hospital has closed its doors until Monday morning.
The attack sparked many reactions, including that of Health Minister Yannick Neuder, who went to Annemasse on Saturday to show his support for healthcare workers.
"I said it today, there is only one answer: zero tolerance. I will work alongside you to implement the necessary measures to protect you," he declared on the social network X after the meeting.
He mentioned his desire to engage in discussions with the Ministers of the Interior and Justice to condemn the attackers more firmly, "particularly with minimum sentences."
Every day, on average, in France, 65 health professionals are victims of physical or verbal attacks, the Haute-Savoie prefecture and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regional Health Agency (ARS) indicated on Thursday in a joint press release.
