Behind the poorly understood chronic fatigue syndrome and possibly the similar long Covid lies a "collapse" of normal interactions between the gut microbiota, the immune system and metabolism, a study reveals.

“ At first, even minimal exertion like showering or washing dishes would trigger post-exertional discomfort and force me to lie down right afterward.", says Ariane, 65, on the page of France Assos SantéLike around 250,000 people in France, she suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis, whose symptoms often appear after a viral infection and whose origin was until now very poorly understood. It would in reality be a breakdown of the normal interactions between the intestine, the immune system and the metabolism, concludes a new study published in the journal Nature Medicine. “ This disruption can fuel symptoms such as fatigue, pain or sleep disturbances." explains Julia Oh, a microbiologist at Duke University (United States) who led this work.
