Beyond its surface area and volume, two parameters already explored, the complex shapes of our brain are also genetically linked to its functions, demonstrates a study examining 22 brain regions. These results reveal potential early biomarkers, visible on imaging, of neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases.

Besides volume and surface area, the geometry of our brain and the complex shapes that its regions take are linked to its functioning – and, probably, its dysfunction – concludes a study published in the journal Science Advance. Researchers identified 80 genetic sequences that are strongly linked to the structure of our brain.

“ Half of human genes are probably involved in brain development and function", reveals Kaustubh Patil, a specialist in machine learning and computer science applied to neuroscience at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf (Germany), who led this work.
