Sometimes the immune system targets the wrong person. It goes awry and attacks the body's cells. These are called autoimmune diseases. This is the case with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Common symptoms include abdominal pain and diarrhea.
These intestinal diseases affect nearly 250,000 French people and their treatments are very limited. However, studies in this area are multiplying and raising hope. In September 2024, American researchers discovered a new bacteria which weakens the intestinal immune system in patients with IBD.
