Aesthetics vs. Safety? Tattoos are becoming increasingly common in France: according to a market study carried out in 2024 by Businesscoot, the number of tattooed people has increased from 10 to 20 % in a decade. A figure that could surely continue to increase, since young adults have a much more positive perception of tattoos than the rest of the population (68 % have a good image of them, compared to 43 % for the French population as a whole).
However, tattoos are not without risk: they can cause adverse reactions (redness, itching, scars, blisters, pain, allergies), or even infections. So much so that the Bichat Hospital in Paris opened a few years ago a consultation dedicated to the management of these complications associated with tattoos, currently managed by dermatologist Nicolas Kluger (who also works at the Helsinki University Hospital in Finland and is the author of the book My tattoo and I, Vuibert editions).
