Fibromyalgia: a large-scale genetic study finally sheds light on the origins of the disease

A large-scale study of over 2 million people has identified 26 regions of the genome associated with fibromyalgia. The results reinforce the hypothesis that the disease is primarily linked to the functioning of the nervous system and open new avenues for understanding its symptoms and developing treatments. A study published in Nature Medicine in July 2026 brings long-awaited insight into the genetics of fibromyalgia. «"These results add another layer of evidence demonstrating that fibromyalgia is very real."», says Michael Wainberg, a researcher at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, affiliated with Sinai Health and the University of Toronto, and co-author of the article.
