Food aid cut for tens of millions of Americans in November

November 4, 2025

The Trump administration said Monday that food assistance to some 42 million Americans will be reduced in November because of the month-long budget impasse.

The government will use $4.65 billion from an emergency fund to finance payments related to the Snap program, the main public food assistance program in the United States, which will cover approximately "50% of the aid to eligible households," an official from the Department of Agriculture stated in court documents.

This announcement follows a decision by a federal judge in Providence (northeast), one of two who last week ordered the executive branch to use emergency funds to ensure the continuity of the Snap program.

The Trump administration claims the program is out of funds after a month of "shutdown," with Democrats and Republicans unable to agree on a new budget and blaming each other.

President Donald Trump assured on Friday that he was ready to release the necessary funds if the courts decided so, saying he "did not want Americans to go hungry."

Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic minority leader in the House of Representatives, on Sunday accused Donald Trump and his Republican party of "exploiting the hunger" of the 42 million beneficiaries of this program.
