Government launches parliamentary mission on menopause

October 18, 2024

The Ministry of Health announced on Friday the launch of a parliamentary mission on menopause, on the occasion of the world day dedicated to this physiological phenomenon which affects 14 million women in France.

In May, Head of State Emmanuel Macron said he was in favour of such a mission on this societal "taboo", in order to take stock of "the state of care (...) (treatments, support, osteoporosis, cardio and psychological monitoring) and the difficulties encountered by women in terms of information and monitoring".

The mission was entrusted by Prime Minister Michel Barnier to Macronist MP Stephanie Rist, a member of the Social Affairs Committee of the Assembly, the Ministry of Health indicated in a press release.

It will have to respond to "three main challenges": "highlight the symptoms and consequences of menopause on the daily life and physical and mental health of women", while "87% of menopausal women present at least one symptom of menopause in addition to the cessation of periods"; "strengthen the preventive approach"; "inform the government on the current health care of menopause", the ministry continues.

The proposals that will be drawn from this mission, which will be "conducted by involving all stakeholders, in particular the National College of French Gynecologists and Obstetricians", are expected in spring 2025, the press release specifies.
