Minister for Equality between Women and Men, Aurore Bergé, said on Monday that surrogacy (GPA), which Gabriel Attal wants to debate legalizing, is "totally contrary" to "the dignity of women," on Europe1/CNews.
"I do not deny the powerful desire for a child that can exist. (...) I can completely understand the pain of those who cannot become parents," explained the minister, who was asked to respond to the proposal by the secretary general of the Renaissance party, which aims to achieve surrogacy presented as "ethical."
But Ms. Bergé "does not want to see the question of women's bodies and human dignity being put into balance in order to respond to this sincere desire for a child that may exist."
The president of the Macronist deputies, Gabriel Attal, wants to put the legalization of surrogacy up for internal debate within the Renaissance party, as part of a thematic convention that will be the subject of a vote by members.
Surrogacy is the practice of a woman, commonly referred to as a "surrogate mother," carrying a child on behalf of a pair of intended parents, to whom the child will be given after birth.
President Emmanuel Macron said last year that he was not in favor of surrogacy, which he said was "not compatible with the dignity of women" and constitutes "a form of commodification of their bodies."
