JAKARTA – The reason why the Indonesian government imports 1 million tons of rice. The head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas), Arief Prasetyo Adi, revealed that the option to import 1 million tons of rice was to cover food reserves until February 2025.
Arief said that the food reserves were made in line with the government's efforts to achieve food self-sufficiency through domestic production. The need to have the possibility of adding imports of one million tons of rice follows the report of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) regarding the national rice production.
“Kemarin kan teman BPS juga menyampaikan bahwa untuk menyiapkan cadangan pangan lagi ke depan. Sambil kita juga memperkuat produksi dalam negeri. Itu memang ada tambahan satu juta ton,” Arief said when meeting after the coordination meeting of the Coordinating Ministry of Food at the office of the Ministry of Forestry, quoted on Wednesday (10/30/2024).
However, he said that based on past experience, rice production from year-end to February often faced shortages.
“Satu juta ton itu tentunya melihat neraca dari produksi, kemudian berapa cadangan yang harus kita miliki supaya kita bisa sampai melewati bulan Februari 2025. Biasanya bulan Desember, Januari, Februari itu produksinya memang agak di bawah,” explains Arief.
For this reason, Arief said that the option of increasing rice imports by one million tons still does not forget the national production.
“Tapi mana kala produksi dalam negeri dengan segala upaya, kan sudah lihat sendiri ya. Pak Mentan, Pak Wamen, timnya semua, kita semua sudah mengupayakan produksi dalam negeri,” he said.
“Tetapi, projection dari BPS itu memang kurang. Jadi, memang kita harus ada cadangan. Itu saja sih penjelasannya,” continues Arief.
