Large M5.7 earthquake hits northern Tapanuli, North Sumatra

JAKARTA – A large earthquake measuring M5.7 occurred north of Tapanuli, North Sumatra. Although it was large, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 131 kilometers.

This information was relayed by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) via its social media account. The earthquake occurred on Sunday (15/9/2024) at 04:37 WIB.

"The earthquake occurred at coordinates 1.86 north latitude and 98.95 east longitude, 17 km southwest of North Tapanuli, North Sumatra," BMKG wrote.

The earthquake was reported to have no tsunami potential.
