That's almost half of the French population. The least advantaged 40% bear the brunt of the increase in newborn mortality in France since 2012.Children born to the most disadvantaged mothers have a 70% higher risk of dying in their first month of life than the best-born children.

“ Disadvantaged people bear the brunt of the increase in neonatal mortality in France alone" warns pediatrician Victor Sartorius. Since 2012, the mortality rate during the first month of life has continued to increase, going from 2.4 to 3 per thousand, according to INSEE, or three-quarters of the 2,700 annual deaths of children under 1 year old. Far from being distributed randomly, these additional deaths only occur in disadvantaged communities, reveals a research team at Inserm in the journal BMJ Medicine.
