The plan will improve the detection, prevention and treatment of viruses by advancing knowledge of their biology.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases released an update on September 17, 2024, regarding research priorities to improve our understanding of MPOX and its different strains or clades. NIAID Director Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo discusses the importance of these research priorities and the urgent need for better tools to combat this deadly disease.

Current mpox epidemicThe National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has The MPOX research priorities update has been published.. NIAID's MPOX program focuses on four main goals: increasing knowledge about the virus, also known as a strain, that causes MPOX and its biology, and understanding how it is transmitted. It will also evaluate current vaccine dosing regimens and develop new vaccine concepts.

In 1970, the first case of human MPOX was reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This disease is widespread in West and Central Africa. Clade I, which is widespread in Central Africa, can cause severe disease. Clade II is endemic in West Africa and tends toward milder symptoms. The global epidemic of mpox in 2022Children, pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems, and those with compromised immunity are at higher risk of severe COPD, regardless of the type of virus involved.

NIAID is working closely with U.S. partners and other international organizations to minimize the impacts of the current mpox outbreak and protect public health worldwide. NIAID's national and international infrastructure will be leveraged to achieve the Institute's goals.
