The National Institutes of Health has found that Dr. Eliezer M. Masliah committed research misconduct by falsifying or fabricating figure panels in two separate publications. NIH will notify both journals of its findings so that they can take appropriate action. NIH began its research misconduct review in May 2023, after receiving allegations that month from the HHS Office of Research Integrity. NIH began its investigation phase on December 20, 2023. It concluded its investigation into these allegations on September 15, 2020, and notified HHS ORI of its findings.
Masliah, an NIH-funded intramural investigator studying synaptic damage in neurodegenerative diseases, joined the National Institute on Aging in the summer of 2016. As an NIH intramural investigator, he has published a number of articles. Dr. Masliah is not currently the director of the NIA DN. Amy Kelley MD is the deputy director of the NIA and also serves as the acting NIA DN. NIH does not discuss personnel matters beyond this.
According to NIH policy and procedure, any allegations involving extramural research that Dr. Masliah conducted prior to joining the NIH will be referred through HHS ORI.
