Young people with severe obesity who underwent weight-loss surgery at age 19 or younger saw their obesity-related comorbidities disappear 10 years after their weight-loss surgery, according to the results of a large clinical study funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Study participants, with an average age of 17, underwent either gastric sleeve or gastric bypass weight-loss surgery. Participants experienced an average 20% reduction in body mass index after 10 years. They also experienced a 55% reduction in type 2 diabetes and a 57.5% reduction in high blood pressure. Gastric bypass and sleeve gastricectomy produced similar results.

In a recently published NIH-funded study, 55 %s in type 2 diabetics had their levels reduced compared with adults who had weight-loss surgery. The rates for these patients (18 %s after seven years or 12.7 %s after 12 years) were significantly lower. study.

These results show that bariatric surgeries in children and adolescents have greater health benefits and longer lasting effects than similar treatments in adults.
