"Many people want me to run for a third term."
US President Donald Trump has left open the possibility of running for a third term, saying: "This is not a joke."
Asked in a telephone interview with NBC News on the 30th (local time) whether he wanted a third term, President Trump replied: "I like to work." He then added: "It's not a joke," but "I think it's still too early (to talk about a third term)."
The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution limits a person's right to be elected president more than twice. When asked if he intended to run for a third term on this basis, he responded positively, saying, "There is a way to make it happen."
Asked about a scenario in which Vice President J.D. Vance ran and ceded the position to President Trump, he replied, "That's one solution," but "there are other solutions." When asked if there were other methods, he simply replied, "None."
He said: "Many want me to run for a third term," but "basically, I'm saying I still have a long way to go. The government is still in its infancy."
Repealing term limits by amending the Constitution requires a two-thirds majority vote in Congress or the consent of two-thirds of the states to convene a constitutional convention to propose a constitutional amendment. In either case, ratification by at least 75 of the 50 states would be required.
President Trump has often discussed the possibility of running for a third term. “Should I run again? Tell me,” he told a crowd at the White House last month.
At a luncheon at the US Congress on St. Patrick's Day, the 12th, he said, "I hope I can attend at least three more times," and joked, "When I use the word 'minimum,' they (the journalists) go crazy."
