Menstrual panties, cups, and washable sanitary pads: more environmentally friendly and more economical in the long run than their disposable counterparts, reusable menstrual products are also considered healthier. However, a new study reveals that many of them contain PFAS, perennial pollutants with suspected harmful effects on immunity, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.

CHOOSING YOUR MENSTRUAL PROTECTION. “ Are there any claims on the label that suggest the product you're considering 'works better,' 'lasts longer,' is more 'water-resistant' or 'stain-resistant,' or is significantly more expensive than other similar products that perform the same function?", lists chemist Graham Peaslee, who led this work at the University of Notre Dame (United States). These are all characteristics that he has observed to be correlated with the use of PFAS in absorbent fabric wristbands and to which he advises consumers to be attentive when choosing their washable menstrual protection.
