Psychedelics for treating schizophrenia: a promising avenue?

A new study argues for the therapeutic potential of microdosing psychedelics to treat a form of treatment-resistant schizophrenia. This argument runs counter to current medical recommendations that present schizophrenia as a strong contraindication to the use of psychedelics.

After resistant depression, alcohol and drug addiction, end-of-life anxiety, post-traumatic stress syndrome... Italian researchers propose, in a study published on September 18, 2024 in the journal Nature, to explore the therapeutic potential of using psychedelic substances in very low doses to treat schizophrenia, particularly in patients with chronic negative and cognitive symptoms resistant to treatment (approximately 25% of patients according to Inserm).

A rather surprising proposition since schizophrenia is presented as medically incompatible with the use of psychedelics due to the risk that the latter present of exacerbating psychotic symptoms.
