Human contamination occurs mainly through the oral route. via Food and drinking water. Animal proteins (fish, meat, dairy products, eggs) are the foods that contribute most to PFAS exposure. In addition, they cross the placental barrier and end up in breast milk, exposing infants. Once ingested, PFAS, particularly those with long carbon-fluorine chains, accumulate in the body, as the liver lacks the necessary enzymes to break them down.
