Has almost everyone in Réunion encountered chikungunya? To date, there have been more than 200,000 consultations, including 50,000 confirmed cases using PCR tests. It's huge", says Muriel Vincent, epidemiologist at the regional unit of Réunion at Public Health France.

During the previous chikungunya epidemic in 2005 and 2006, the total number of cases reached 250,000 over two years. There, it's 200,000 in a few months. And yet, when the virus reappeared in 2024, there was still a residual portion of immunity in the population.. » Some people affected by the virus in 2005 still had a form of immunity, which protects them against this new epidemic wave.
