Two NGOs publish a map of pollutants in tap water in France

October 17, 2025

PFAS, pesticides and their metabolites, nitrates, perchlorates, etc…: thanks to this tool, called “Dans Mon Eau” (available at the address https://dansmoneau.fr/), « You will be able to find out, wherever you live, if you are exposed via tap water. "to these substances," the two NGOs indicate, adding that they wanted to make already public data more accessible and understandable. The data compiled for this map, which will be " updated monthly" , are " results of the health inspection carried out by the Regional Health Agencies (ARS) for each drinking water distribution unit (UDI)" , the two NGOs indicate.

A map that reveals a great heterogeneity of situations

A search engine allows you to enter your home address and view the data that corresponds to it, with " the results of the latest analyses carried out on each category of pollutants", data" updated monthly, thus allowing for the earliest possible identification of new problematic situations", explain the NGOs. It is also possible to know the history of the exposure, with annual reports (from 2020 onwards), indicating the percentages of non-compliant analyses found each year.

This map reveals, in particular, " a great heterogeneity "on the territory, according to the authors of this tool:" Northern France is particularly concerned by the majority of cases of non-compliance and recommendations against consuming the water", the authors point out, adding that " The vast majority of cases of non-compliance with regulations, recorded as of August 29, 2025, are due to the presence of pesticide metabolites.. »

Inadequate monitoring of PFAS in more than half of drinking water distribution units

“ In general, water quality is generally good in France, with currently more than 871 wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) compliant with regulations and without exceeding health limits." , indicate Generations Futures and Data For Good. They specify, however, that this figure is " to be interpreted with caution", because it excludes metabolites (molecules resulting from the breakdown of pesticides) classified as " irrelevant "by the health authorities."

NGOs highlight uneven monitoring of PFAS known to the general public as "perpetual pollutants", used in many objects for their non-stick, waterproofing or heat resistance properties, but some have detrimental effects on health.

The metabolite of a herbicide used for sugar beet cultivation is very present

There is a lack of analysis. in more than half “52.41 TP3T of UDIs,” the NGOs indicate, referring to Occitanie and the overseas departments. Regarding pesticides, 5.71 TP3T (1,377) of UDIs in France are non-compliant for these substances, according to the report. One metabolite alone is responsible for 861 TP3T of these non-compliance cases: chloridazone desphenyl, a metabolite of chloridazone, a herbicide that was used mainly in sugar beet cultivation from the 1960s until 2020, the year it was banned in France and Europe.
