We rarely think about them, yet it is our vocal cords that connect us to the world. Deep within our larynx, and without our conscious awareness, they are constantly in motion. Hundreds of times per second, these two structures, at once firm, flexible, and pearly, come together, stretch, vibrate, and undulate. It is under the pressure of the air rising through the trachea during exhalation that their vibrations give the voice its timbre and power.
