This recommendation could be counterproductive, demotivating those with sedentary lifestyles. Some researchers believe that a target of 7,000 steps per day is more realistic. Others even think that the distance is less important.

The advice to take 10,000 steps a day comes from a Japanese ideogram meaning 10,000 and resembling steps, without any scientific basis.

Five fruits and vegetables a day, at least seven hours of sleep, 1.5 liters of water, 10,000 steps a day… The list of recommended daily health goals is endless. Some, however, have less scientific basis than others. And when these goals are too difficult to achieve, they can be counterproductive and discourage many of us from even trying… Like those famous 10,000 steps a day, which represent 6 to 8 kilometers, or one and a half to two hours of walking daily. So, what's behind this number, and what does science actually say about it?
