The flu epidemic, which has been particularly severe this season, is coming to an end across mainland France, the public health agency reported on Wednesday, with no region in France now experiencing an epidemic.
In mainland France, "influenza activity was decreasing in the city and in hospitals across all age groups," summarized Public Health France in a weekly report ending Sunday, March 16.
All regions of France are now in a "post-epidemic" situation, an intermediate state between normal and a declared epidemic. Until now, Nouvelle-Aquitaine was the last metropolitan region to remain affected by the epidemic.
On the other hand, it continues overseas in Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyana and Mayotte.
The flu was particularly severe during the 2024/2025 season, killing the elderly and sending many children to hospital.
Several factors have contributed to this situation, including the co-circulation of several strains and the limited effectiveness of the vaccine deployed this season, particularly among those over 65.
The flu vaccination campaign, which began on October 15, combined with the Covid vaccination campaign, ended on February 28.
Despite the improvement in the epidemic situation, health authorities are calling for caution: "although significantly decreasing, the flu positivity rate remained high (...), indicating continued active circulation of influenza viruses," notes Public Health France.
Bronchiolitis – except in Mayotte, which remains in an epidemic state – and Covid remain generally stable at a low level.
